The Thames creates ‘fetches’ in certain areas, so although the large scale production and turbines are largely in the east, the river still allows the potential for production at smaller scale, collectively making a difference to a site either in the river, like a jetty or pier, but even those just on the banks.

Small scale turbines have been installed at the O2 in Greenwich, for example.

The cost of wind generation has started to levelise against traditional and fossil fuels (BEIS, 2020), reducing the cost per kw for the operator. If closer to demand this can be used when combined with battery storage when the grid providers raise costs a certain times of peak demand.  Many operations can be asked to switch off, which is not practical for port operations working to the tide, renewable options become viable to run ‘off-grid’ options during such constraints that may increase in the future.
