As part of the new Thames Tideway Tunnel sewer construction, some of the existing Thames Water Combined Sewer Outfalls (CSOs) have been moved to new locations further into the river.
This table shows the status of each of the CSOs to assist mariners in making informed decisions on their passage planning.
Red = CSO discharging or will discharge imminently.
Amber = CSO is in alert and may discharge with short or no notice.
Not active = CSO is not discharging, nor is it likely to, or the CSO is not yet operational.
These CSOs may discharge foul water into the river at speeds of up to around 6 knots whenever there is or has been heavy precipitation. As such, mariners should be:
aware of the location of these outfalls,
read and follow advice contained in the relevant Notices to Mariners,
pay attention to the warning lights mounted on each site,
monitor VTS broadcasts and,
ensure they have digested the information contained on the Tideway site on the possible effects to navigation.
Whilst the tunnel goes through the process of being fully connected, there is an interim period when the CSOs are either not connected or only partly connected to the tunnel. This means they will discharge more frequently. This is expected to be the case until mid-2025.
