Mariners are advised that, on or about 14th July 2025, contractors instructed by the Environment Agency are expected to commence works to the Fobbing flood defence barrier. The general location is indicated by the red marking
on the chartlet below: -
The Fobbing flood defence barrier consists of 4 moveable gates, each 9m wide. These works will be undertaken on the 2 centre gates – Gate 2 and Gate 3 - only. Only one of these gates (Gate 2 or Gate 3) will be undergoing works at a time. There will be no works on Gate 1 or Gate 4 at this time.
The following is a photograph of the Fobbing flood defence barrier, with the span and Gate 4 labelled for illustrative purposes: -
The following diagram of the Fobbing flood defence barrier shows the Gates labelled with their number.
Whenever Gate 2 or Gate 3 is undergoing works, the gate will be lowered into the defence position, marked with yellow & black tape and illuminated at night. The barrier structure fixed warning beacons may also operate. During these times, the Fobbing barrier remains open to navigation, with vessels required to navigate through the open span width.
Mariners are advised to proceed with caution at a safe speed, keeping clear of the lowered gate and keeping a sharp lookout for other craft and for workers and equipment involved in these works and being aware of the available depth of water taking into consideration the height of tide.
Personnel are expected to work 0700–1800, Monday to Friday only and these works are planned to be completed no later than 15th September 2025.
Further details may be obtained from London VTS on VHF channel 68 or telephone 01474 562215.
