Supporting Charities and Community Initiatives

As a trust port, we are committed to supporting charities and organisations whose work directly connects to the tidal Thames, aligns with Thames Vision 2050 goals, and benefits the communities we serve.

Our Funding Priorities

We provide support through partnerships, sponsorships, and limited donations, prioritising initiatives that align with the following key areas:

  • Thames Vision 2050 Goals – Projects that contribute to water safety, environmental sustainability, access, inclusion, education, heritage, or wellbeing.
  • Geographic Relevance – Activities taking place within the tidal Thames region from our landward to our seaward limits, including the tidal section of the Medway up to Allington Lock.
  • Community Benefit – Initiatives that enhance connections with the river, improve quality of life, increase safety, and promote environmental sustainability in London, Kent, and Essex.

Who We Support

Funding is available to registered charities and community organisations, including:

  • UK-registered charities
  • Charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs)
  • Charitable companies
  • Registered charitable industrial and provident societies (IPS) or charitable community benefit societies (BenComs)
  • Community interest companies (CICs) limited by guarantee
  • Constituted voluntary organisations

We do not provide funding for:

  • Retrospective costs
  • Individuals
  • Organisations that do not have a direct link to the tidal Thames, Thames Estuary, or Port of London Authority
  • Initiatives that compromise safety or harm the environment
  • Faith-based community groups that strictly support one demographic while excluding others
  • Projects that present a conflict of interest for the PLA

Dedicated Funding Programmes

We also run specific funding programmes designed to support targeted outcomes:

  • Active Thames – Encouraging physical activity on the tidal Thames and inland waterways of London, Kent, and Essex, with a focus on engaging underrepresented groups, including people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. Find out more.
  • Thames Environment Fund – Supporting initiatives that protect and improve the natural environment of the Thames. Find out more.
